Dinner with the Wild Things – Swallow Tail Dining Pop-Up – Dec 2012

Looking for something a little different for Christmas?  Of course you are, or you wouldn’t be reading this.  So how about mixing some children’s literature with some fine dining by the folks at Swallow Tail Supper Club?  What if it was a pop-up restaurant with a location to be announced closer to the date?  Good

Swallow Tail Supper Club were the one’s who brought the culinary creations to the Alice in Wonderland themed Down the Rabbit Hole which was featured on Bob Blumer’s World’s Weirdest Restaurants.   Hoping to recreate the magic of the first children’s literature and fine dining mashup, they present to you Dinner with the Wild Things which I trust will be an appropriate tribute to the late Maurice Sendak’s beloved book, Where the Wild Things Are.

This time the food is being handled by Fat Dragon which is a fusion of American Southern BBQ/Asian restaurant.  Swallow tail will be handling add on cocktails and canapes.  Performances by Circus Beasties.

Vancouver Inspiration Pass – via Vancouver Public Library

Jim Rohn used to say that only 3% of the population had a library card.  While I don’t know if this is actually true, but if it is it’s really sad for the 97% who are missing out on what our public library system has to offer.

This morning, I received a surprisingly refreshing tweet announcing the Vancouver Inspiration Pass being distributed by the Vancouver Public Library in conjunction with it’s Program Sponsors and Partners.  In essence it is giving us a Tourist in Your Own City Pass.   While many of us have the means to go to these attractions and places ourselves, please pass the word on to those families and people who don’t have the means and/or those who need a bit of enticing to explore a different side of the city.  And enjoy it yourself too!

I’ve mirrored the information here for your convenience.  For up to date details, do go to their website at: http://www.vpl.ca/InspirationPass

Vancouver Inspiration Pass

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Vancouver Inspiration Pass is a free cultural and recreational pass program that allows families and teens to get out and explore their city in a whole new way.

Thanks to the program’s twenty Partner Venues, Vancouver residents can use their free library card to check out the best that their city can offer – including popular attractions, museums, heritage sites, fitness facilities, world-class gardens and musical performances.

With a Vancouver Inspiration Pass you can spend an afternoon with a sea otter, discover a secret garden; dive into aquatics; learn about sailing the seven seas and navigating the stars; uncover our city’s past, explore the future and much more.

Created to increase community engagement and inclusivity and support lifelong learning, the pass provides opportunities for Vancouver residents – regardless of socio-economic status – to benefit from the many diverse cultural, learning and recreation activities offered throughout Vancouver.

But most of all, it’s a ton of fun!

Down the Rabbit Hole, a Pop-Up Restaurant – In the House Festival – Swallow Tail

ANOTHER POST UPDATE:  A lot of traffic is coming in whenever the World’s Weirdest Restaurant episode airs.  Sadly, Down the Rabbit Hole being a Pop-Up Restaurant was a short run and is no more.  However, please bookmark www.inthehousefestival.org and subscribe to their newsletter or Twitter feed, as their next Pop-Up themed dinner (2013 date to be announced) will be a Peter Pan or a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory inspired one.

POST UPDATE: It was a fabulous evening, I would have reviewed this but a few blogs did a fabulous job of capturing the evening.  Photos at 604Foodtography and Diane Smithers and review at Foodlists.ca and  Guestarant.com

UPDATE:  Celebrity Chef and Food Network star Bob Blumer (Surreal Gourmet and Glutton for Punishment) is going to be featuring this unique pop-up restaurant on his new show, World’s Weirdest Restaurants.  Even better is that  I managed to purchase the last two tickets for a foodie friend and myself for the filming!

Down the Rabbit Hole: A dining experience like no other

For food and wine lovers who want to add a little wonder to their dining experience, In the house and Swallow Tail have just the thing. Follow us down the Rabbit Hole to a secret underground space where amazing food and magical performances come together to give you an interactive and unforgettable evening. It’s fine dining, theatre and surprising  delight all rolled into one!

Swallow Tail’s Secret Supper Club has created “Down the Rabbit Hole – A Fine Dining Experience Like No Other”. This unique pop-up dinner will include five playful courses, inspired by Alice In Wonderland, while characters from the story will interact with guests through the evening as they adventure through Alice’s world. Open for only nine seatings before it disappears forever, the pop-up will be held at a secret location, revealed to guests one week before their chosen seating.

The evening starts at the outskirts of a moonlit forest, where guests are greeted by a frantic White Rabbit, who ushers them down the rabbit hole, to a nostalgic world of childhood fairytale characters. The Mad Hatter pours tea and soup is served in a “Drink Me” bottle labeled either “Big” or “Small”. The bottle guests drink from will determine their next course.

Asked “what’s a pop-up restaurant?” Robin Kort, Chef & Owner of Swallow Tail responds, “A pop-up restaurant is where creativity in the kitchen is at its highest level. Renegade chefs invite guests into the back alleys of the city to hidden locations to experience conceptual, one time only menus.”

The enchantment only lasts for 9 days, so make sure to book your dinner now!

Wicked: The Musical – QE Theatre June 1-26,2011

Although this production (and the book by Gregory Maguire) have been around for quite awhile, I first heard about this last year when a friend was heading to New York and we were talking about what Broadway shows would be good to see. I had forgotten about it and then I was walking around in Book Warehouse and I saw this book that just called to me to be picked up and wouldn’t you know it, it was one of Gregory Maguire’s books (the third in the Wicked series).  What a coincidence.  Or was it?

Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, and her relationship with Galinda, later Glinda, the Good Witch of the North (in the The Wonderful Wizard of Oz novel, Glinda is the Good Witch of the South). Their friendship struggles through their opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, their reactions to the Wizard’s corrupt government, and, ultimately, Elphaba’s public fall from grace. The plot is set before and during Dorothy’s arrival from Kansas, and includes several references to well-known scenes and dialogue in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz as a backstory.

I’ve heard from many people that it is an amazing production to be seen.  So when it was announced that it was coming to Vancouver, I made sure that I got tickets.   Prices seem to be quite on the rise and the premium Centre Orchestra tickets to me just seem way out of line.   Although, I bought the next level down, I’m certainly expecting this to be a damn good show for the money they’re asking.

I’ve also heard that if you have read the book that it is quite different than the musical and that both can be enjoyed independently.  The book is more adult in nature and theme whereas the musical can be enjoyed by younger folks without the conservative folks having to worry as much about the violent imagery and sexual situations.

Tickets go on sale March 5th, but if you’ve got an American Express than go to The Front of the Line!  Can you believe that I’ve had an AMEX since 1999 expressly for the purpose of Front of the Line service (and to have a secondary backup card) but I’ve never used it until booking these tickets?

If you like Wicked (the Musical) you may want to pick up the Wicked: The Grimmerie, a Behind the Scenes Look at the Broadway Musical.  Although, I’ve only thumbed through it at Chapters, this is how a book of this nature should be put together.  A nice plush cover with a weathered feel to it and gorgeous pictures to accompany the text inside.

Naked Girls Reading : Love Stinks!

Valentine’s Day can be a harsh reminder to some that love doesn’t always turn out like we want it to.  But remember, all the great love stories are tragic.  Whether it’s Romeo and Juliet or Ross and Rachel, I think we can all agree that love – when it’s done right – stinks.

So we feel there’s no better way to ring in the Valentine season than removing our clothes and reading from some of literature’s greatest heartbreaks.  And this time, we’re doing it ALL OVER NORTH AMERICA!  Every chapter of Naked Girls Reading is celebrating the month of February with Andrew Shaffer (Huffington Post Bad Boy) and his latest book, “Philosophers Who Failed at Love”.

In our little corner of the NGR Universe – Vancouver – we will be reading selections from this book, along with other angsty, tragic, funny, and just plain heartbroken selections.

Naked Girls Reading the Grinch review

You can't spell "Literature" without T&AI’m going to say that I didn’t know what to expect [yeah, I googled NGR to death before booking], but as someone wrote, “It’s Naked Girls.  Reading.  Or… Girls Reading.  Naked.  What’s to understand?”  Not much I suppose.  However, I knew that I was in for a good time.

We arrived at Beaumont Studios on West 5th near Cambie.  Diamond Minx recognized my moose antlers from the 2010 Closing Ceremonies repurposed into reindeer antlers.  We had time to check out the gallery upstairs (I really enjoyed the Vancouver series in acrylic by Laura Zerebeski), which unfortunately meant that we missed the doors opening and ended up sitting near the back where it was difficult to see the performers.   Not that I was there necessarily to ogle but to at least see the faces and expressions without having to lean one way or the other, does make a difference.   Three of the performers realized this and stood as they did their readings.  Hopefully they’ll do something creative with the seating, so that all can enjoy the beauties (and brains) at the front of the room.  The studio holds about 50, so book early and pay the little bit extra for front row seating.

Diamond Minx was a great host throughout the night and introduced the other members of tonight’s performance (each monthly event has a different line up).  Birthday Girl Jenny Magenta who I recognized from Jacques LaLonde’s The Lost Supper at this years Vancouver Fringe Festival.  She’s so animated that you can’t help but smile while watching her in her element.   Trixie Hobbitses had an air of innocence like Cindy Loo Who (she even had the curls, as did Jenny Magenta) and like a Christmas tree she had a huge gold glittery star on top.  Loved the glittery red lips too.  I think I may have popped one or two of her balloons during a fundraiser contest of the May Screaming Chicken Taboo RevueRufflesilkskin is the newest burlesquer and she reminded me of someone beautiful, although I just can’t put my finger on who. She appeared a little reserved (as much as one can be while reading naked) I would think because burlesque has movement and well… reading has very little. (unless, of course, you’re Jenny MagentaLittle Woo rounded out the bunch who has a hell of a gorgeous voice with looks to match.

The evening was split up into three sections with short intermissions in between each. which allowed you to purchases drinks, pasties and themed cookies.  It was a playful selection of readings with Christmas news broadcasts, a twisted T’was the Night Before Christmas, Diamond Minx’s rendition of Vixen, and Crumbs at Midnight a Christmas Horror Story being the favourite for me.   For the end, of course, they saved How The Grinch Stole Christmas, read by all five of them.

In the end, does them being totally starkers add a different element to the evening?  Definitely, but not how I imagined.  [From TorontoDomincano.com] The women describe the NGR salon as magical, entrancing and enchanting. “It has a courtesan feel about it,” Cheex says. “It’s seductive, because we’re naked, and, at the same time, comforting, like listening to your mother reading to you when you were little.”  Okay… so that image might throw some people into therapy…

I’m looking forward to attending future shows if the genre interests and definitely to see whether next year’s Christmas edition utilizes the new “tradition” that Michelle L’Amour started with her unique showing of Frosty the Snowman.   I highly recommend checking a Naked Girls Reading performance for yourself.  It will be a unique intimate experience and it certainly makes for very colourful watercooler talk!

Next Naked Girls Reading Vancouver will be January 20, 2010.

Naked Girls Reading – the History

Naked Girls Reading was begun in Chicago in March 0f 2009 as the idea of International Showgirl Michelle L’amour and Franky Vivid.  The idea had rolled around in their heads for a few years in different formats, but with the opening of Studio L’amour in 2008 it materialized as the perfect intimate live event.

After the very first event it was obvious to all in attendance that something big had just happened, something spiritual.  Immediately, the press took hold and emails started coming in from cities all over the country from ladies interested in starting their own franchise.

Bah! Humbug – SFU Woodward’s – Dec 17th & 18th, 2010

And yet another one from the VancouverMusicals.com e-mail.

Bah! Humbug! is a unique adaption of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, a seasonal classic that celebrates the transformative vision and power of human redemption.

Produced as a staged reading and musical event, this timeless story continues to speak to today, especially in light of parallels between the economic disparities of Victorian London and Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

Join Director Max Reimer (Artistic Director, Vancouver Playhouse), award winning actor Jay Brazeau (Ebenezer Scrooge) and a cast of professional actors and Downtown Eastside community actors in this spirit-lifting story brought to life with words and song. Expect a few entertaining detours along the way with surprise special guests!

Inspired by a collaboration between Vancouver Moving Theatre and SFU Woodwards, this new Woodward’s tradition is a benefit for Downtown Eastside community arts practice and the Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival.
